Play-a-Story

Before they are ever told how and what to play, young children have a free and unselfconscious musicality. Imagine your child beginning her life’s musical journey by exploring her own musical stories, discovering beauty without judgment, through guided improvisation.

Developed by Australian music educator Lyndel Kennedy, Play-a-Story introduces real playing to 5 and 6 year-olds in a way that compliments their natural sense of exploration and spontaneity, and provides them with skills that enable a smooth transition to more formal lessons such as those offered by the Simply Music Piano Program.

Play-a-Story is a musical journey in which you and your child travel through a storybook world. It uses the piano as its mode of travel, creating sounds, melodies, harmonies and rhythms to express the story...literally, students create their own musical soundtrack.  Using the piano, students learn to interpret mood, color and nuance as the story unfolds. Play-a-Story teaches this by providing foundational, systematic and creative experiences that harness a child's intuitive, musical appreciation and interpretation.

As well as carefully structured and engaging lessons with your teacher, students are provided with beautiful Student Home Materials, all accessed online in a lovely, child-intuitive digital format that review what is taught in each class. More than just play-along accessories, these materials provide the environment in which your child can explore his musical stories each day. Your Teacher will guide you in how to gain the best value and pleasure from your Home Materials.
